"Men / Women wanted for hazardous journey...
...Small wages. Bitter cold. Long months of complete darkness. Constant danger. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success."

Structural and Functional Studies of Ribosomes
Especially motivated students and postdoctoral scientists with excellent academic and research track record are encouraged to apply. We are interested in understanding ribosomal structure and function in all kingdoms of life. Using a combination of biochemical, crystallographic and electron microscopic experiments we have obtained insights into co-translational nascent chain folding, processing and targeting to the membranes. Our recent focus is to understand eukaryotic cytoplasmic and mitochondrial ribosomes and their functional complexes involved in regulation and initiation of protein synthesis. We use state-of-the-art cryo-electron microscopes for high-resolution structure determination by single particle reconstruction methods. Ultimately we intend to obtain a “molecular movie” of these processes at high resolution so that they can be understood at a detailed mechanistic level. We are also part of the National Center of Competence in Research RNA & Disease and of the Zurich Center for Structural Biology. Our institute provides a challenging and stimulating atmosphere combining experience accumulated working on difficult problems in structural biology with excellent infrastructure.
Postdoctoral candidates should have less than 2 years of postdoctoral experience in the field of biochemistry or structural biology. We are an equal opportunity employer and offer competitive salaries. Applicants are also encouraged to apply for fellowships. For application, please supply CV and three letters of recommendation.
